Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method

The Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method (11073NAT), is the perfect entry level qualification into the Classical Pilates method for you to start your Pilates career. With strong ties to the Fitness training packages it recognises and respects the knowledge that many fitness instructors have already gained.

Marena and Chris Digby trained in New York in the prestigious Alycea Ungaro training program.  They are 3rd Generation Classical Pilates teachers and the co-owners of Positive Action and have over 30 years of Pilates experience each and are considered both Fitness and Pilates experts. Regularly invited to present at fitness conventions such as Filex Australia. In 2015 Marena and Chris were personally invited to present on Pilates at the world’s largest fitness convention; IDEA World in Los Angles. Marena has co-authored a book and appeared on Pilates DVDs

Graduates of the Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method will understand the history, principles and philosophies of the original Joseph Pilates works as taught to Chris & Marena by 1st generation teacher Jay Grimes and several 2nd generation teachers. Graduates will learn about the complete Pilates ‘system’ and where the Matwork and Reformer fit into this system and how to teach Classical Pilates Mat and Reformer in both groups and private settings.

Accredited Units

The following table outlines the units of competency that make up the Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method 11073NAT.

* Unit HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, is not part of the course fees or offered by Positive Action Pilates. Students with this qualification can apply for RPL. Alternatively, it can be completed with an external provider. Proof of completion will be required to take the final exam and complete the Certificate IV.

Learning Objectives

Our goal for you is to become the level of Pilates Mat and Reformer instructor that we would employ at our Studio, as well as be attractive to other employers. Our Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method (11073NAT) will assist you to be a sought-after instructor in health clubs, small boutique Pilates Studios and in the corporate field. There is also an exit point available to you if you only want to teach the Classical Matwork.

With the Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method (11073NAT), you will be able to confidently instruct Matwork and Reformer Pilates in both a group or 1-on-1 setting.

  • Understand the history of the Classical Pilates method including the history of Joseph Pilates himself.
  • Understand the differences between the varying styles of Pilates.
  • Understand the influences and philosophies of the differences between styles of Pilates.
  • Understand the Classical ‘Principles’ of Pilates.
  • Understand how applying the Classical ‘Pilates Principles’ effects the outcome in relation to movement.
  • Injury prevention strategies related to Pilates exercise including using the reformer safely.
  • Principles of Classical Pilates Mat / Reformer planning and repertoires to enable the selection and sequencing of exercises appropriate for beginner, intermediate and advanced clients.
  • Principles of instruction to enable instruction of an effective session.
  • An understanding of contraindications and the reasons why they are avoided to enable safe client participation in the Classical Pilates Mat / Reformer session.
  • Instructional and motivational techniques suitable for Classical Pilates Mat / Reformer sessions to support client adherence to exercise.
  • Group management techniques to assist individuals within the group to achieve their desired outcomes.
  • Common injuries and Injury prevention strategies related to Pilates exercise including using the reformer safely.

Entry Requirements & Pre-requisates

Minimum requirements for entry into the Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method (11073NAT) are:
*   Year 12 education or equivalent.
*   A basic understanding of Pilates –we recommend participating in Mat and Reformer classes prior to attending the specific Pilates units of the course.
*   A Certificate III in Fitness may make you eligible for 4 credits (RPL)
*   A Certificate IV in Fitness may make you eligible for 7 credits (RPL)
*   Qualifications in other fitness/health fields (i.e. Yoga, Massage, etc.) may make you eligible for RPL, contact Positive Action Pilates to discuss.

Students must have language, literacy and numeracy skills sufficient to understand anatomy terms, physiology terms, pathology terms and can communicate with other Allied Health professionals.

Students must be physically able to undertake a range of Pilates exercise. A medical practitioner’s certificate may be required at the discretion of the RTO.

Hours

The Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method (11073NAT) has both face to face and self-paced components and must be completed within 12 months.

Student Work/Log books must be undertaken which include the following:
Observation Hours – 30 hours
Self-Mastery Hours – 50 hours
Apprentice Teaching Hours – 50 hours

Successful completion of the Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method also requires the student to complete reading and writing assignments, which include the viewing of specific Pilatesology videos as well as an 80% pass mark on the final written and practical exam.

Your Trainers

Authors and developers of The Certificate IV in the Classical Pilates Method. Marena and Chris Digby are 3rd generation Classical Pilates teachers and are the co-owners of Positive Action Pilates and its Studio arm ‘The Pilates Company’. They have over 30 years of Pilates experience each and are considered both Fitness and Pilates experts.

Their initial Pilates training was with Polestar Australia where they completed the Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction. From this point, they studied several Pilates styles including Stott Pilates and Fletcher Pilates. In 2010 Marena and Chris took their to their first trip to America, to participate in Classical Pilates intensive training with 2nd generation teacher Siri Dharma; co-hosted by 1st generation teacher and Pilates elder Jay Grimes.

They have since participated in another two Classical Pilates intensive trainings featuring such noteworthy 2nd generation teachers’ as Alisa Wyatt, Tiziana Trovati, Mari Winsor, Brett Howard, Jennifer Kries and many more.

Despite their extensive experience and expertise, Marena and Chris continue to seek mentoring and ongoing education from the best Pilates teachers in the world. This includes studying from many reputable and respected linages.
